President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged state governors to stop constructing flyovers in areas with low traffic and instead invest their increased federal allocations in road networks that improve the quality of life and enhance security operations.
The President made the call on Thursday while receiving a delegation of traditional rulers from Oyo State, led by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Tinubu noted that states now receive four to five times more revenue from the Federation Account than they did previously, stressing that the funds should be channelled into projects with greater impact on the lives of citizens.
He said improved road infrastructure would not only boost economic activities but also provide security agencies with better access to remote communities.
The President also reiterated his administration’s commitment to combating insecurity without negotiating with terrorists or paying ransom to kidnappers.
Speaking on the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Tinubu disclosed that the kidnappers demanded the release of detained gang members in addition to ransom payments, but the Federal Government rejected the conditions outright.
He explained that the decision to expand the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions was informed by the need to improve response time and strengthen the military’s capacity to tackle terrorism and banditry across the country.
Tinubu commended the armed forces for the successful rescue of the abducted victims, describing the operation as a reflection of improved intelligence and military strategy.
The President further revealed that the Federal Government is advancing plans to establish state police with safeguards against abuse, adding that traditional rulers would play a significant role in the new security framework.
He attributed the growing insecurity in Nigeria partly to the security crises in neighbouring Mali, Burkina Faso and the Republic of Niger, saying the situation has worsened cross-border security challenges.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to strengthen security institutions and improve the country’s capacity to defeat terrorism and banditry.
