The Kano State House of Assembly has commenced a four-day strategic retreat for its lawmakers and management staff in Kaduna as part of efforts to promote legislative inclusiveness and improve governance in the state.
The retreat, which began on Thursday, focuses on enhancing the capacity of legislators and Assembly officials through sessions on the importance of research, effective management of legislative documents, the code of conduct for public officers, preparation of legacy reports, and strengthening executive-legislative relations to maximise democratic dividends.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his sustained commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through support for legislative capacity-building programmes.
Falgore said the governor’s investment in legislative development reflects his understanding of the vital role of a strong legislature in promoting good governance, accountability and sustainable development.
The Speaker also reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to transparency, accountability, diligence and the enactment of people-oriented laws that would drive the progress and prosperity of Kano State.
In his remarks, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Bello Butu-Butu, also praised Governor Yusuf for his continued support for legislative capacity development and for fostering a cordial working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government.
He assured residents of Kano State that the Assembly would continue to deliver quality legislation and effective oversight in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Resource persons at the retreat include Prof. Aminu Umar of the Department of Political Science, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Dahiru Idris of Bayero University Kano, and facilitators from SAHL Human Resource, who delivered papers on promoting legislative inclusiveness for good governance.
The retreat is designed to equip lawmakers and management staff with the knowledge and skills required to strengthen institutional memory, improve accountability, facilitate leadership transition and provide a lasting reference for future Assemblies.
The programme was organised by the Kano State House of Assembly in collaboration with SAHL Human Resource as part of efforts to deepen the capacity of legislators and Assembly staff and enhance the effectiveness of legislative service delivery.
