President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the ongoing 2026 primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across the country as a clear demonstration of internal democracy within the ruling party.
Speaking on Saturday after participating in the APC presidential primaries at Ikoyi-Obalende Ward L2 in Lagos, the president said the exercise had strengthened grassroots politics and democratic participation among party members.
Tinubu, who arrived at the venue with the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, was received by Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos APC Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr Jumoke Oduwole, and former Minister of Finance Wale Edun, among other party leaders.
The president commended APC members for their orderly conduct and commitment to democratic values during the exercise.
“This is a demonstration of internal democracy and it has been going on very well according to plan. This is grassroots politics where every member of the party has the right to participate,” Tinubu said.
He added that the process across various states — from ward congresses to local government congresses, delegate accreditation, validation, and membership registration — had been conducted successfully.
According to the president, the smooth conduct of the exercise showed that democracy in the country could be rated highly.
Tinubu reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to transparent and inclusive democratic processes, stressing that grassroots participation remains essential for sustainable democratic development.
He also praised electoral officials, party leaders, and security agencies for ensuring a peaceful and credible exercise, while urging Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and national unity.
The president further reiterated his administration’s commitment to good governance, political stability, and policies aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.
