The Senate Committee on Regional Development has launched an investigation into the financial operations of the North West Development Commission (NWDC), raising concerns over the commission’s spending patterns.
During an oversight session, lawmakers alleged that about N943 million, representing nearly 79 percent of the N1.19 billion spent by the commission, was used to pay board allowances.
The committee also questioned why the NWDC remains the only regional development commission operating without executive directors and permanent employees, despite being inaugurated in February 2025.
Responding to the lawmakers’ concerns, the supervising ministry, the commission’s board, and its Managing Director attributed the situation to operational challenges affecting the commission’s activities.
However, the Senate committee insisted that urgent steps must be taken to address the challenges, stressing that the commission must be fully equipped to deliver on its mandate of promoting development and improving security across the North West region.
