The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has foiled an attempt to smuggle suspected Indian hemp into the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kurmawa, Kano State.
The command also arrested a 40-year-old suspect, identified as Nura Mohammed, a resident of Janguza Quarters, in connection with the incident.
The command’s spokesperson, CSC Musbahu K/Nassarawa, disclosed this in a statement issued in Kano on Monday.
According to the statement, the incident occurred at about 12:00 noon when the suspect allegedly attempted to throw a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into the custodial centre.
However, officers of the Armed Squad Unit, under the supervision of its commander, CSC Usman M. Sale, reportedly detected the suspicious activity and swiftly apprehended the suspect before the substance could gain access to the facility.
The statement said the Controller of Corrections in Kano State, CC Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, commended the officers for their vigilance, alertness and commitment to maintaining security within custodial facilities.
Lakpene reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards the smuggling of prohibited items into correctional centres and urged members of the public to desist from such activities.
The suspect has since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening security across its custodial centres to ensure a safe environment for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
