The Yobe State University Teaching Hospital has recorded a major medical breakthrough after successfully performing its first total hip replacement surgery on a young man suffering from sickle cell disease.
The surgery was conducted on Saturday on a patient who developed avascular necrosis, a condition in which bone tissue dies due to inadequate blood supply to the affected area.
The operation was led by Dr Lawan Yari, alongside Dr Musa Abdulmalik, Dr Bashok Palagvi, Manasseh Jonah and Karumi Ibrahim.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Muhammad Gana, who disclosed the development on Sunday, described the surgery as a landmark achievement for the state’s healthcare sector.
He explained that total hip replacement involves removing a damaged hip joint and replacing it with an artificial joint.
According to him, the specialised procedure had previously not been available in the state, describing the successful operation as a significant achievement by the teaching hospital.
Gana also recalled that the Yobe State Specialist Hospital recorded another medical breakthrough in May when it successfully performed a major maxillofacial surgery on a 40-year-old woman.
The woman had been diagnosed with a rare, non-cancerous tumour that had developed in her lower jawbone.
The commissioner attributed the two medical achievements to the support of Governor Mai Mala Buni and the provision of modern medical equipment to healthcare facilities across the state.
