A former minister, Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, has declared his intention to contest for the Kano North Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for a potential political showdown in the state.
Gwarzo made the announcement on April 18, 2027, stating that his decision followed extensive consultations, deep reflection, and prayers for divine guidance, driven by a commitment to serve humanity.
“It is against this backdrop… that I humbly and solemnly accept your call,” he said, confirming he will run under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The seat is currently held by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, making Gwarzo’s entry into the race a direct challenge to a powerful incumbent.
Political observers say the move may not be unconnected to ongoing tensions in Kano politics, particularly allegations that Senator Jibrin influenced the blockage of the appointment of Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor.
Adding to the intrigue, some aides of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf were reportedly present at Gwarzo’s declaration event, fueling speculation of backing from elements within the state government.
Although there has been no official reaction from Senator Jibrin, the development signals the beginning of what could be a fierce and high-stakes battle for Kano North ahead of the 2027 elections.
