Bauchi youth parliament pushes for inclusion, innovation, drug abuse control

Representatives at the Bauchi State Youth Parliament have called for increased youth representation in governance, innovation, agricultural empowerment and urgent measures to tackle drug abuse in order to build a sane society.

The resolutions were adopted during a legislative sitting presided over by the Speaker of the Parliament, Mohammad Idris, on Tuesday.

The parliament adopted a series of motions and proposed bills aimed at promoting youth development, inclusive governance, economic empowerment and social reforms across the state.

During the sitting, lawmakers deliberated on issues affecting young people in Bauchi State, advocating policies designed to strengthen participation, leadership opportunities and sustainable development among youths.

One of the major resolutions adopted was a motion seeking the implementation of 40 per cent youth inclusion in policy decision-making processes, with special consideration for female representation.

The motion was presented by Hauwa Ibrahim.

The parliament also considered a bill seeking the establishment and regulation of youth-led gubernatorial debates in Bauchi State.

The bill, sponsored by Idris Musa, is expected to encourage political participation and civic engagement among young people.

In another development, the parliament adopted a motion on strengthening youth empowerment through sustainable agriculture and poultry farming for both rainy and dry season activities.

The motion was presented by Mukhtar Aminu.

Lawmakers also adopted a motion for the establishment of the Bauchi State Innovation and Enterprise Fund, sponsored by Yusuf Nasir, to support entrepreneurship and innovation among youths.

The sitting further witnessed the presentation of a bill seeking the creation of a special seat for Persons with Disabilities in the Bauchi State Youth Parliament.

The bill was presented by Magaji Jibril as part of efforts to promote inclusiveness and equal representation.

Similarly, Muawuya Jaja presented a motion of urgent public importance on the rising rate of drug abuse among youths in Bauchi metropolis and surrounding communities, calling for immediate intervention to address the growing social menace.

Another motion adopted by the parliament focused on the establishment of a comprehensive youth skills acquisition and empowerment programme in Sakwa Constituency. The motion was presented by Jibrin Ibrahim.

Speaking during the sitting, Idris commended members for their commitment and constructive contributions towards issues affecting the future of young people in the state.

The Speaker also expressed appreciation to the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, for his continued commitment to youth development and empowerment.

He particularly applauded the governor’s disposition towards entrusting young people with greater responsibilities and strategic roles in governance, describing it as a demonstration of confidence in the capacity and potential of Bauchi youths.

Idris noted that the deliberations and resolutions reached during the sitting reflected the parliament’s determination to build a more inclusive, progressive and opportunity-driven society for young people across Bauchi State.
