Things to know about Saudi Arabia’s new Grand Mufti

Saudi Arabia has appointed Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Humaid as the new Grand Mufti of the Kingdom and Head of the Senior Council of Scholars.

Humaid was appointed by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.

He will succeed Sheikh Abdulaziz, who passed away Tuesday at the age of 82.

Role of Grand Mufti

The Grand Mufti is the principal religious/legal authority in Saudi Arabia. Among other duties, he heads the Council of Senior Scholars and the Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Issuing Fatwas.

Birth

Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Humaid was born in 1949 in Buraidah, Saudi Arabia

Imam

He has been Imam Khatib at Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque of Mecca).

Shura Council

He is a member of the Shura Council (Consultative Assembly) since 1993.

Speakership

He is the Speaker of the Majlis al-Shura between February 2002 and February 2009.

President

He is the President of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy.
