The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the public display of the academic credentials and personal particulars of presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The documents displayed include those of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, who are the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to the documents, Tinubu obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University in the United States in 1979. He also completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in Oyo State between 1982 and 1983. His work history includes employment with Mobil Nigeria, service as Governor of Lagos State, and his current role as President of Nigeria.
Shettima’s records show that he attended Lamisula I Primary School before proceeding to Government Secondary School, Potiskum. He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri in 1989 and subsequently obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan. He completed his NYSC service between 1989 and 1990.
INEC said the public display of candidates’ credentials is a statutory requirement under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, allowing members of the public to examine the documents and challenge any alleged false declaration or forgery through the courts.
The commission also announced that campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will officially commence on August 19, 2026, in line with its revised timetable.
