The Presidency has dismissed as false and misleading a viral report claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to amend the constitution to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern region.
In a statement issued on Thursday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the report was entirely fabricated and intended to create tension and political instability ahead of the 2026 general elections.
According to the statement, President Tinubu has no intention of sending any bill known as “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly, contrary to claims circulating online.
The Presidency described the authors of the report as “agents of destabilisation and merchants of disorder,” urging Nigerians to disregard the story completely.
It also stressed that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a rigorous legal process that requires approval by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly as well as endorsement by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
The statement added that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians rather than engaging in divisive political agendas.
The Presidency further warned citizens to be cautious of fake and inflammatory reports that may increase as political campaigns intensify ahead of the January 2026 general elections.
