Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has backed the decision of the Nigeria Democratic Congress to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, describing the move as a step toward national unity, fairness and political balance.
Speaking at the party’s National Convention held in Abuja on Friday, Kwankwaso said the zoning arrangement would allow the South to “complete its turn in producing national leadership,” while promoting healing and inclusiveness across the country.
The former Kano State governor stated that the party’s decision reflected the principles of federal character and equity, adding that the NDC was committed to building a leadership system free from ethnic and religious bias.
Kwankwaso said Nigeria was currently facing severe economic and security challenges caused by poor leadership, noting that insecurity, declining investments, failing infrastructure and economic hardship had worsened the living conditions of many citizens.
According to him, Nigeria’s history has shown that strategic political alliances and balanced leadership arrangements have often helped the country overcome difficult periods.
He cited historical alliances involving political figures such as Aminu Kano, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Shehu Shagari and Alex Ekwueme as examples of cooperation that strengthened national unity and democratic governance.
Kwankwaso also urged Nigerians to participate actively in the democratic process by registering with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and joining the NDC ahead of future elections.
The NDC convention comes amid growing political realignments and debates over power rotation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
