Heavy Rainstorm Ravages N350m Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja

A severe rainstorm accompanied by strong winds on Tuesday evening tore through the newly constructed Kugbo bus terminal in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), leaving significant structural damage in its wake and disrupting traffic along the Kugbo–Mararaba expressway.

The multi-million-naira facility, reportedly built at a cost of over N350 million, suffered extensive damage as roofing sheets and steel reinforcements were ripped off by the storm and hurled onto the busy roadway. Several vehicles were reportedly struck by falling debris, compounding the disruption during peak commuting hours.

Witnesses at the scene described scenes of chaos as commuters travelling toward the Nyanya and Masaka axes were forced to halt amid flying debris and blocked lanes. Emergency responders and security personnel were deployed to clear wreckage and restore traffic flow late into the night.

The terminal, a flagship project under the administration of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, was intended to enhance commuter services within the capital. However, its rapid structural failure during the first major downpour of the season has sparked widespread public concern over construction quality and material standards.

Critics have called attention to what they describe as possible shoddy workmanship, questioning how a high-cost public facility could succumb so easily to routine weather conditions.

For Minister Wike, who has previously highlighted his commitment to infrastructural development and rigorous contractor oversight, the incident represents a reputational setback.

As of Wednesday, the FCT Ministry had not issued an official statement on the extent of the financial loss or any intended action against the contractors responsible for the project.

The damaged terminal remains cordoned off, a stark reminder of the challenges in delivering resilient public infrastructure.
