JUST IN: Governor Douye Diri Resigns from PDP

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The governor’s spokesperson, Daniel Alabrah, confirmed the development but did not disclose the reasons behind the resignation. He also declined to state whether the governor plans to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a related development, all PDP members in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, as well as Commissioners in the State Executive Council, have also reportedly resigned their membership of the party.

Daily Trust gathered that Governor Diri is currently addressing members of the state executive at Government House, Yenagoa. The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, is also in attendance.

Earlier on Wednesday, Governor Diri and former President Goodluck Jonathan attended the commissioning of the Best Western Plus Hotel in Yenagoa.

Governor Diri had previously served as a Commissioner when Jonathan was Governor of Bayelsa State. He was also the Principal Secretary to then-Governor Seriake Dickson, who later became his immediate predecessor.

Diri was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2015 under the PDP platform and later won election to the Senate in 2019, representing Bayelsa Central. He became Governor of Bayelsa State in 2020 and secured re-election in 2023, both under the PDP.
