Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti dies at 82

The Grand Mufti in Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Abdulaziz, has passed away.

In a statement, the Royal Court said that the renown sheikh died Tuesday morning.

Sheikh Abdulaziz was born in Mecca in November 1943 and served as head of the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta, and the Supreme Council of the Muslim World League

He was the third Grand Mufti, after Sheikh Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Shaikh and Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Baz.

The Royal Court added that King Salman and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman offered their condolences to the late Sheikh’s family, Saudi people and the Muslim world.

According to the statement, funeral prayer would held at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, after the Asr prayer on Tuesday.

The statement said, , “With his passing, the Kingdom and the Islamic world have lost a distinguished scholar who made significant contributions to the service of science, Islam, and Muslims.”

However, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz has also ordered that a funeral prayer be held at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Medine, and all mosques across the Kingdom after the Asr prayer.
