Two suspected cases of Ebola disease have been identified in Nigeria’s North-East region, amid ongoing efforts to contain the outbreak following the evacuation of the country’s first confirmed patient to Switzerland.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) disclosed this in an update on Saturday, saying the two individuals had been isolated while contact tracing and laboratory investigations were ongoing.
The development comes days after Nigeria confirmed its first case of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in a 42-year-old woman who arrived in Abuja from Uganda on October 3.

The patient, whose corndition had stabilised following treatment in Nigeria, was medically evacuated to Switzerland on October 26, following a formal request from her country and clearance by Nigerian authorities.
According to the NCDC’s October 29 situation report, 62 contacts linked to the confirmed case had been identified and were being monitored.
The agency, however, said the two suspected cases in the North-East were still undergoing laboratory testing, stressing that their status would depend on the test results.
It urged Nigerians to maintain proper hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and follow public health advisories.
The NCDC said further updates would be provided as more verified information became available.
