Kano Man Who Lost Wife and Six Children in Attack Remarries Under Mass Wedding Scheme

Haruna Bashir, who lost his wife and six children in a deadly attack in the Chiranchi (Dorayi) area of Kano State, has remarried under the mass wedding programme organised by the Kano State Government.

Bashir was among 1,500 grooms who got married under the state government’s mass wedding initiative aimed at supporting young people to establish families and addressing the challenges associated with marriage.

Following the killing of his family, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had pledged to support Bashir and help him remarry. The governor had also provided him with a house and support to undertake the Hajj pilgrimage.

On January 17, 2026, assailants reportedly broke into Bashir’s residence in Chiranchi and killed his 35-year-old wife, Fatima Abubakar, and their six children.

The incident sparked widespread grief in Kano and across Nigeria, with members of the public calling on security agencies to identify and bring those responsible to justice.

The Kano State Police Command later arrested several suspects in connection with the killings, including Umar Auwalu, who police alleged had a relationship with the deceased, Fatima Abubakar.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the attack was allegedly planned with the involvement of other individuals. The suspects were subsequently arraigned before a court on charges including conspiracy, murder and other related offences.

The case is still ongoing, and no final judgment has been delivered.

Bashir’s inclusion in the Kano State Government’s mass wedding programme has attracted public attention, with many describing it as an opportunity for him to begin a new chapter of his life after suffering a devastating loss.

Well-wishers have prayed for peace and stability in his new marriage and asked God to grant mercy to his late wife and six children.
