Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commissioned the commencement of water distribution from the Goron Dutse Reservoir to communities across Kano metropolis.
The commissioning, held on Monday, marks the return of the facility to active service after more than three decades of abandonment and limited use.
Speaking at the ceremony, Yusuf described the revival of the reservoir as a historic milestone for his administration and the people of Kano State.
He said restoring the facility was part of his administration’s broader efforts to revive critical infrastructure and address longstanding challenges confronting residents.
According to him, the commencement of water distribution from Goron Dutse would improve access to potable water across the metropolis.
“This is a historic project for Kano State. The Goron Dutse Reservoir has been abandoned for more than 30 years, and today we are bringing it back into operation to serve the people of Kano,” Yusuf said.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing other critical water projects across the state.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, said the resumption of water distribution represented a major step towards improving the reliability of public water supply in Kano metropolis.
Hashim said the Goron Dutse facility has a combined storage capacity of approximately 39.8 million litres, comprising three reservoirs with capacities of 10 million litres, 7.3 million litres and 22.5 million litres.
He said water was currently being pumped from the Challawa Water Treatment Plant into the Goron Dutse reservoirs for distribution to communities in different parts of the metropolis.
According to the commissioner, the ₦11 billion project, executed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), includes works on the Challawa Water Treatment Plant and the transmission system supplying the Goron Dutse distribution station.
He said the main transmission pipeline from Challawa to the Goron Dutse distribution station spans approximately 15.6 kilometres.
Hashim explained that the project was originally scheduled for completion by December 2026, but the commencement of water distribution represented a major operational milestone achieved ahead of schedule.
He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to restoring critical water infrastructure and expanding access to safe and reliable water for households, businesses and communities across Kano State.
The commissioner also commended Governor Yusuf for prioritising the revival of the facility and providing the political and administrative support needed to return the reservoir to service.
