Farmer-herder: FCT council chair imposes curfew to prevent further clash

By Adamu Abdullahi
‎
‎The Executive Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Hon. Kasim Mohammed, has commiserated with both Paiko indigenous farming communities and Fulani pastoral settlements over the recent farmer-herder clash in Paiko, urging both sides to embrace peace.
‎
‎In a statement issued on Sunday, October 18, 2026, by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Muhammad Isah Hassan, the Chairman described the incident as unfortunate and called for restraint.
‎
‎Hon. Kasim Mohammed said peace remains fundamental to development and appealed specifically to youths in Paiko to avoid confrontation, retaliation, and acts capable of escalating the tension.

‎
‎He acknowledged that the clash was linked to complaints of cattle straying into farmlands and destroying crops, but warned farmers against resorting to self-help.
‎
‎According to him, farmers who experience crop destruction should report to relevant security agencies rather than taking the law into their own hands, noting that such conflicts often affect innocent people who do not understand the root cause.
‎
‎The Chairman also called on residents to cooperate with security personnel deployed to the community.
‎
‎As part of measures to contain the situation, he announced a temporary restriction of movement in the affected Paiko communities and the deployment of additional security personnel to maintain law and order.
‎
‎He disclosed that an enlarged security meeting has been convened, with youth leaders, the Sarkin Noma, Ardos and other community leaders from both sides invited to deliberate and find a lasting solution.
‎
‎Hon. Kasim reiterated that anyone who feels unfairly treated or whose complaint has not received adequate attention should report directly to him for intervention.
‎
‎He urged both communities to learn from the incident, forgive one another, and prioritize dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation with security agencies.
‎
‎”The future and development of Paiko depend on your collective commitment to peace,” the Chairman told the youths.
