BREAKING: Senate Passes State Police Bill

The Senate on Wednesday passed a constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police across Nigeria.

The legislation was approved after lawmakers considered and adopted its 26 clauses during the committee of the whole session.

The proposed amendment aims to create a constitutional framework that would allow state governments to establish and control their own police services while maintaining the existing federal policing structure.

The passage of the bill marks a significant step toward decentralising policing in Nigeria, a proposal that has generated extensive national debate over security, accountability, and the distribution of powers between the federal and state governments.

If eventually enacted, the legislation would provide legal backing for state-controlled police forces to operate alongside the Nigeria Police Force.

Further legislative procedures are expected before the constitutional amendment can take full effect.
