The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Zamfara State University branch, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Zamfara State Government to commence implementation of the new salary structure for university lecturers or face the closure of the institution and a warning strike.
The union disclosed this in a statement signed by its Acting General Secretary, Abdussamad Muhammad Usman, and made available to journalists.
The decision followed the branch’s second congress held on September 21, 2026, at the university’s campus in Talata Mafara, Zamfara State.
The branch chairman, Comrade Anas Dogo, said the union had concluded arrangements to take appropriate measures, including diplomatic and legally recognised labour actions, to ensure the implementation of the new salary structure agreed upon between the national leadership of ASUU and the Federal Government in December 2025.
Dogo said the lecturers’ demands were not limited to the implementation of the new salary structure, but also included payment of promotion-related allowances and salary arrears accrued since the commencement of the new payment structure.
He explained that the two-week ultimatum followed several efforts by the union to resolve the matter through dialogue.
According to him, the union had written letters requesting meetings with relevant state government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Head of Service and Commissioner for Education, but the efforts had failed to yield the desired outcome.
ASUU warned that if the state government failed to commence implementation of the new salary structure and settle other outstanding entitlements of its members within the stipulated period, the union would have no option but to shut down the university and embark on a warning strike in line with Nigeria’s labour laws.
