NERC Warns Against Touching Victims of Electrical Shock

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a safety advisory urging residents to keep a safe distance from live electrical wires and to avoid touching anyone who is in contact with electricity.

In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, the commission stressed that electricity is highly dangerous and that attempting to rescue a victim without proper precautions could lead to additional injuries or fatalities.

The advisory stated: “Safety first: Don’t become the next victim. Electricity is powerful and unforgiving. If you see a live wire on the ground or witness someone being electrocuted, your instinct may be to help immediately. However, touching the victim with bare hands or trying to pull them away could cause the current to pass through you as well.”

NERC outlined key safety measures for the public, including: never touching a live wire or an affected person directly; maintaining a safe distance while ensuring others do the same; and immediately notifying the nearest electricity distribution company (DisCo) or emergency services.

The commission urged residents to act responsibly and allow trained professionals to handle electrical emergencies, noting that adherence to safety guidelines can save lives and prevent further accidents.

The advisory forms part of NERC’s ongoing public awareness campaign aimed at promoting electrical safety and reducing incidents linked to fallen power lines and other electrical hazards. Residents were also encouraged to share the message widely to help safeguard their communities.
