Woman kills her stepdaughter in Kano

A Kano State High Court sitting in the municipal area of Kano has sentenced a woman, Hafsa Umar, to 10 years in prison after finding her guilty of killing her stepdaughter.

During the court proceedings, the court heard that Hafsa assaulted her stepdaughter following an allegation that the girl had taken her kuli-kuli (peanut cracker). The prosecution told the court that the assault involved the use of excessive force which ultimately led to the child’s death.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Barrister Hafsa Adam and Barrister Jamilu Abubakar, presented witnesses and evidence to establish the case against the defendant. The defence, on their part, called two witnesses.

In her judgment, Justice Aisha Mahmud held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Justice Mahmud consequently found the defendant guilty of the offence, which is contrary to Section 226 of the Penal Code, and sentenced her to 10 years in a correctional facility
