The Senate has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin for a peacekeeping mission.
The approval, granted on Tuesday, was made in line with Section 5(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the swift approval was necessary to help restore peace and stability in the neighbouring country and to avert a looming humanitarian crisis in the sub-region.
Lawmakers described the troop deployment as a step in the right direction, noting that Nigeria must continue to play a vital role in safeguarding regional security and democratic order.
