Gunmen shot dead Police inspector at Edo checkpoint

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a police inspector by gunmen at a checkpoint in Benin City.

The officer, who was attached to the Ekiadolor Area Command, was shot dead while conducting a routine stop-and-search operation, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, said in a statement on Friday.

According to Yamu, the incident occurred when an unregistered, black, heavily-tinted Lexus SUV approached the checkpoint and refused to stop when flagged down.

“The suspicious conduct of the occupants prompted the operatives to make further efforts to subject the vehicle to standard security checks,” he said.

“Tragically, in the course of this lawful engagement, one of the occupants of the vehicle suddenly opened fire on the inspector at close range and zoomed off.”

Yamu said the Command has launched a full-scale investigation and an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators.

He added that all available intelligence and operational assets have been deployed to ensure the assailants are tracked down and brought to justice.
