Resident Doctors Suspend Warning Strike After Two Days

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its five-day warning strike just two days after it began.

NARD president, Tope Osundara, confirmed the suspension in a telephone interview with TheCable on Sunday, noting that doctors are expected to resume work immediately.

“The strike has been suspended,” Osundara said. “Some of our demands have been met, while the government has promised to address the remaining issues. We took this step as a sign of goodwill and to ease the suffering of Nigerians seeking healthcare in our facilities.”

He explained that the doctors will review the federal government’s response to the outstanding demands, which include unpaid arrears and the downgrading of membership certificates issued by the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

Other demands, according to him, are the shortage of medical manpower and the release of the corrected circular on remuneration for doctors by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC).

The strike, which commenced on Friday, had crippled services in federal hospitals across the country before the suspension.
