The Nigeria Police Force has arrested 27-year-old Hafsat Abubakar for allegedly creating and circulating a fake notice claiming that OPay would cease operations.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Iniedu, said Hafsat was arrested on September 4, 2026, following a complaint filed by OPay with the police on August 31.
According to him, the Police Cybercrime Centre conducted an extensive internet investigation and traced the origin of the fake notice to an X account allegedly operated by Hafsat.
The police said the document was fabricated and presented as an official OPay statement, falsely claiming that the company would suspend its operations from September 1.
OPay subsequently debunked the notice, confirming that it was continuing its operations normally.
The police warned that the circulation of false information on social media could cause panic, financial losses and reputational damage to businesses.
The Force urged members of the public to verify important information through official sources before sharing it online.
