The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has issued a fresh safety advisory to female students, urging them to adopt precautionary measures aimed at preventing sexual harassment and rape on campus.
The advisory, displayed on a roll-up banner by the university’s Student Affairs Division, contains a series of counselling tips designed to promote personal safety in response to reported cases of sexual assault within the institution.
Among the recommendations, the university advised female students not to “shake hands anyhow with any man,” avoid mingling carelessly with men, refrain from staying alone with men in secluded places, and not seek unnecessary favours from men.
Other tips include avoiding pornographic materials, refusing intoxicants, remaining vigilant when served drinks, resisting pressure, learning to say no, and dressing modestly. The advisory also warns that “one-time sex can cause pregnancy,” urging students who do not want such consequences to abstain.
According to the Student Affairs Division, the campaign forms part of the university’s ongoing counselling and awareness initiatives to educate female students on reducing the risk of sexual harassment and rape.
UNILAG has recorded several sexual assault cases in recent years. In April, a 20-year-old undergraduate testified before an Ikeja High Court that she was allegedly raped by a lecturer, Dr. Samuel Ojogbo, in his office on the university campus in August 2025. The lecturer is currently facing trial over the allegation.
The institution also witnessed a high-profile case in 2019 when five students were arraigned over the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old female student.
The university says the latest advisory is part of broader efforts to improve student safety and raise awareness about personal security on campus.
