Kano directs political appointees, civil servants seeking elective office to resign

The Kano State Government has directed all political office holders and public servants seeking to contest in the forthcoming 2026 general elections to resign from their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was conveyed in a circular issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar F. Ibrahim, dated March 24, 2026.
The circular, addressed to key government officials—including the Chief of Staff, Head of Civil Service, Clerk of the State House of Assembly, chief registrars of courts, commissioners, special advisers, directors-general, executive secretaries, managing directors, and other aides—emphasised the need for strict compliance.

According to the SSG, the directive aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act regulating the participation of public officers in partisan political activities.
“This is to ensure strict compliance with the legal framework, particularly Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, and to uphold the principles of neutrality, accountability, and integrity within the public service,” the statement read.
It further noted that all affected officials must either resign or retire, as applicable, before the stipulated deadline if they intend to participate in the elections.
The government also directed that the circular be widely circulated across ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure full compliance.
The move forms part of broader preparations for the 2026 elections, as political activities continue to gain momentum across the state.
