The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the chairmen of three local government councils over allegations of financial misappropriation, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and other administrative irregularities.
The affected chairmen are Abubakar Mustapha of Rogo Local Government Area, Dr. Alhassan Salisu of Bebeji Local Government Area, and Bello Gadanya of Bagwai Local Government Area.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai.
According to the statement, the suspension followed the adoption of the report of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs after it considered separate petitions submitted by residents of the three local government areas.
Presenting the committee’s report, the House Majority Leader, Lawan Hussain Dala, said the petitions alleged financial misappropriation, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and other administrative irregularities against the suspended chairmen.
He explained that the committee examined relevant documents, reviewed official records obtained from the affected local government councils, and held interactive sessions with officials of the respective councils before arriving at its recommendations.
The committee based its recommendation on Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which empower state Houses of Assembly to carry out investigations and oversight functions.
Following the adoption of the committee’s recommendations, the Assembly directed that its resolution be communicated to the Kano State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for immediate implementation.
The Assembly also directed the vice chairmen of the affected local government councils to immediately assume leadership of their respective councils pending the outcome of the committee’s final investigation.
