Gov Yusuf donates N100m to Singer market fire victims

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the donation of N100 million to traders affected by a recent fire outbreak at Singer Market in Kano, as part of efforts to cushion their losses.

The governor announced the intervention on Thursday during a sympathy visit to the market, where several shops were destroyed by the fire.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House Kano, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Governor Yusuf expressed concern over the scale of losses suffered by the traders and assured them of the state government’s commitment to their welfare and speedy recovery.

“I am deeply saddened by what happened here. The government will not abandon you in this difficult moment,” the governor was quoted as saying.

He announced a N100 million relief package to support the victims and help them restart their businesses.

The governor was received by the Chairman of Singer Market, Barrister Junaidu Muhammad Zakari, an elder of the market, Alhaji Sabi’u Bako, and the owner of the affected plaza, Alhaji Munzali Mazaf.

In addition to the relief package, Governor Yusuf directed the immediate expansion and rehabilitation of internal roads within the market to ease movement and boost commercial activities.

He further approved the award of N3 billion for road expansion and rehabilitation projects covering Bello Road, Ado Bayero Road, Kandoki, Yolawa and Kwangiri roads, aimed at reducing flooding and traffic congestion around major market areas in Kano.

The governor also promised to solarise Singer Market, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to modernising markets across the state as part of its urban renewal and economic development agenda.

He directed contractors handling the road projects to mobilise to site and commence work within 10 days.

Leaders and elders of the market expressed appreciation to the governor for the visit and the intervention, describing the gesture as timely and compassionate.

They also commended the state government for its commitment to improving infrastructure and supporting traders in Kano’s major commercial centres.
