Court Denies Bail Application of Tukur Mamu, Orders DSS to Provide Medical Care

Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has rejected a fresh bail application filed by detained alleged terrorists’ negotiator, Tukur Mohammed Mamu.

In his ruling on Wednesday, Justice Umar acknowledged Mamu’s complaints about his health but directed the Department of State Services (DSS) not to release him. Instead, he ordered that Mamu be taken to a suitable medical facility for proper treatment.

The judge noted that the prosecution had demonstrated diligence in handling the case, adding that one of the conditions for granting bail is the lack of diligence by the prosecution. Since the prosecution had been consistent and diligent, he said, the court had no reason to grant bail.

Justice Umar further directed that Mamu’s legal team should select a medical facility of his choice, where the DSS should promptly take him for treatment.

He also ordered the DSS to grant the defendant access to members of his family.
