Jorge Messi, father and longtime representative of Argentine football star Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68.
Jorge reportedly died at about 10pm on Friday at a medical facility in Rosario, Argentina, after a prolonged illness.
He played a crucial role in his son’s development, particularly during Messi’s childhood. Jorge helped secure medical treatment for Messi when he was diagnosed with a growth-related condition and later supported his move to Barcelona at the age of 13.
He remained by Messi’s side during the early and challenging stages of his career in Spain, while the rest of the family stayed in Rosario.
Jorge also served as Messi’s representative for many years, managing his affairs, including contract negotiations and major commercial agreements.
Despite his prominent role in his son’s career, Jorge largely stayed away from the spotlight.
He was married to Celia Cuccittini, and they had four children: Lionel, Rodrigo, Matias and Maria Sol.
His health reportedly became a concern during the 2026 World Cup, when Messi became emotional after Argentina’s opening match and revealed that he had been going through difficult family circumstances.
Jorge’s death marks the loss of a key figure who played a significant behind-the-scenes role in helping Messi become one of the most successful footballers in history.
