Labour Party to Hold National Convention in Umuahia on April 28

The Labour Party (LP) has announced that it will hold its national convention on April 28, 2026, in Umuahia, Abia State.

The party stated that it has informed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about the schedule for its elective congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels, which will culminate in the national convention where new national executives will be elected.

Previously, LP had postponed its national convention, originally scheduled for April 11, and inaugurated a 45-member committee to oversee both the congresses and the convention to ensure a “seamless and credible process.”

In a statement released on Friday in Abuja, Ken Asogwa, senior special adviser on media to the interim national chairman, said the exercise is in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), INEC guidelines, and the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended).

The timetable shows that ward congresses will be held on April 23 nationwide, local government congresses on April 24, and state congresses on April 25 across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The national convention will take place on April 28 at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia.

The party emphasized that notifying INEC of its schedule is in accordance with Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, the INEC regulations for political parties, and Section 223 of the 1999 Constitution, which require political parties to inform the commission of their congresses, conventions, and meetings.

LP also noted that the previous postponement was communicated to INEC to allow broader participation from members, particularly to complete the ongoing digital membership registration process.
