2 children die inside Kano wells

Two children have died after accidentally falling into open wells in Dawakin Tofa and Dala local government areas of Kano State.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said the first incident occurred on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, around 8.53am in Kashirmo Village, Sarkakiya area of Dawakin Tofa LGA.

The service received a distress call from one Kabiru Abdullahi, reporting that an eight-year-old girl, identified as Zara’u Muhammad, had fallen into a well.

“Before the arrival of our special rescue team from the Service Headquarters, residents tried their best to pull her out, but it was impossible due to the depth and water level of the well,” the statement said.

The rescue team later retrieved Zara’u’s body, but she was confirmed dead. Her remains were handed over to the ward head, Abdullahi Garba.

The second incident occurred on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, around 10am when a six-year-old boy, Ahmad Abdurashid, fell into a well at Dandishe Tsamiyar Goodluck in Dala LGA.

Abdurashid was rescued unconscious by fire service personnel but was later confirmed dead. His body was handed over to his father, Abdurashid of Dandishe Quarters.

The Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, expressed sadness over the recurring tragedies and urged residents to take preventive measures to safeguard their communities.

He advised parents and community leaders to ensure that wells are properly covered and not dug along roadsides or in open areas, especially in villages.

“Parents should also monitor the movements of their young children to prevent them from falling into wells and streams,” he added.

The Fire Service reaffirmed its commitment to responding swiftly to emergencies while calling on the public to prioritise safety around open water sources.

Speaking to Daily Trust, the family of six-year-old Ahmad described his death as heartbreaking.

His elder brother, Abubakar Abdulrashid Salisu, recalled the moment of the tragedy:

“I just heard him fall into the well early in the morning. He had come out of the room when everyone was still asleep,” he said.

Abubakar explained that the sound of the fall alerted him to the incident. “The sound made me rush out, and I discovered it was him who fell into the well,” he said.

“He already had psychological problems since birth, and he’s the ninth child among ten siblings, with one younger sister,” Abubakar said.

Fighting back tears, he described Ahmad as a cheerful and affectionate child who was deeply loved by the family.

“We really miss him. You know how children of that age can be—so full of life and love. Losing him is very painful,” he said.
