Security operatives have foiled an attempted kidnapping at Government Girls’ College in Bauchi State.
According to a report by Zagazola Makama, a publication that focuses on counter-insurgency issues in the Lake Chad region, the incident occurred at about 4 a.m. on Sunday, March 15.
The report said some unidentified individuals attempted to gain access to the school premises through a section of the perimeter fence close to the staff quarters.
However, security guards on duty reportedly detected the movement and quickly alerted a patrol team, which responded to the scene.
On sighting the approaching security operatives, the suspected kidnappers fled the area.
The development caused brief panic within the school compound as students raised alarm and moved around the premises, but no student was abducted or injured.
Security officials said the situation has since been brought under control, while surveillance around the school has been intensified to prevent further threats.
Authorities also confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those behind the attempted attack.
The incident comes three months after the Bauchi State Government ordered the closure of primary and secondary schools, as well as tertiary institutions, across the state due to rising insecurity in the northern region.
The closure followed an attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, where about 25 girls were abducted and the school’s vice-principal was killed.
Schools in the state were later reopened on January 4 after a six-week closure.
