Police detain journalist over petition linked to Kano Gov’s DG protocol

Police at the Zonal Police Headquarters in Kano detained a journalist, Ibrahim Dan’uwa Rano, for alleged deformation.

According to Daily Nigeria, Rano was detained following a petition by Director-General protocol to the Kano state governor, Abdullahi Rogo.

Rogo had accused the journalist of defamation of character.

In a Hausa-speaking programme, “Imalu”, Rano said that “a certain DG protocol is collecting bribes to grant visitors an audience to his principal”.

According to an investigation by Daily Nigerian Rogo is under EFCC and ICPC probe over alleged N6.5 billion scandal.

Our source said that Rano was whisked away by the police while working in his office in Kano without presenting an arrest warrant, and immediately took him to the zonal police command for questioning.

He was questioned by the police for alleged defamation and operation of an online television station without being licensed by the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC.

Our source disclosed that Rano has rightly informed the police that he needed no NBC licence to open a website or run online programmes, the police detained him in a cell, allegedly on the orders of the DG.

Even though Rano did not reveal the identity of the said DG in his programme, the police insisted he must bring “Imalu”, the fictional character in the programme before they set him free.
