Open Letter to Kano Govt on Rising Banditry in Shanono, Tsanyawa

On the Rising Banditry and Security Threats in Shanono and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas of Kano State

The Kano Media Advocacy Network (K-MAN) wishes to express deep concern over the fresh wave of armed attacks in border communities of Shanono and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas of Kano State, where no fewer than three people were reportedly killed and several others abducted by suspected bandits.

Reliable information gathered by K-MAN indicates that the assailants, believed to have crossed from Kogari in Musawa/Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, initially attempted to invade Yanganau village in Tsanyawa LGA. However, they were swiftly confronted and repelled by security forces who responded promptly following credible intelligence from residents.

After their failed attempt in Tsanyawa, the criminals reportedly regrouped and launched a midnight attack on Yar Tsamiya in Faruruwa Ward, Shanono LGA, where they killed three people and abducted three others. The attacks occurred around 1:30 a.m., causing panic and displacement among residents of surrounding villages.

K-MAN’s Observations and Commendation

Kano Media Advocacy Network (K-MAN) acknowledges and commends the courage and professionalism of the Nigerian military and other security agencies who successfully intercepted and resisted the bandits’ initial attack in Tsanyawa. Their timely response averted what could have been a large-scale tragedy.

K-MAN also appreciates the collaboration between local vigilante groups, community informants, and law enforcement agencies, whose joint efforts demonstrate the power of unity in combating insecurity in the area.

However, the continuing threats and recurring attacks in border areas such as Shanono, Tsanyawa, Gwarzo, and Faruruwa underscore the urgent need for reinforced surveillance, intelligence sharing, and coordinated response systems across Kano’s border corridors.

K-MAN’s Recommendations

Kano Media Advocacy Network calls on:

1. The Federal Government of Nigeria to urgently strengthen border patrols and deploy more troops along the Kano–Katsina boundary to prevent further incursions as it’s part of the federal government’s efforts to do away with insecurity across the country.
2. The Kano State Government to intensify community-based intelligence networks and support local security formations through logistics, communication equipment, and emergency response systems.
3. The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the reported influx of power-bike riders entering Kano in suspicious numbers and ensure that no criminal elements infiltrate the state.
4. Traditional and community leaders to continuously engage residents in promoting peace, vigilance, and timely reporting of suspicious movements.

Our Call for Immediate Action

K-MAN calls on His Excellency, the Governor of Kano State, as the Chief Security Officer, to maintain his ongoing engagement with security agencies and to prioritize the full protection of Kano’s border communities.
We acknowledge and commend the Governor’s recent closed-door meetings with military and intelligence heads, aimed at addressing the escalating threats. These steps are commendable and should be sustained with even greater intensity.

Kano State must remain a secure and peaceful zone, immune from infiltration and criminal activities. Every effort must be made through collaboration between the federal and state governments, to preserve peace, protect lives, and sustain public confidence in the security architecture of the state.

Signed:
Kano Media Advocacy Network (K-MAN)
