Military takes over govt in Guinea-Bissau, arrests president 

Military officers have toppled Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

The president had survived two coup attempts Since December 2023,

The officers announced this Wednesday, saying they have arrested Umaro Sissoco Embaló

Gunshots were heard near the presidential palace on Wednesday at noon.

Presidential election in the country held just three days ago,  in which the main opposition candidate,  ex-Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira, was disqualified.

The country waits for the release of the presidential election results, which are expected Thursday.

Both President Embaló and his closest challenger, Fernando Dias claimed victory, with the presidential election results due for Thursday.

A report by AFP news agency said that hundreds of people have fled, to avid being wounded.
