Kano intensifies fight against hypertension, expands PHC services

The Kano State Government has intensified its efforts to combat hypertension by extending prevention and treatment services to 208 Primary Health Care (PHC) centres across the state’s 44 local government areas.

The move, according to the Ministry of Health, builds upon the success of an earlier pilot phase that introduced hypertension care in 52 PHCs under the National Hypertension Control Initiative (NHCI).

The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

He stated that the programme receives technical backing from Resolve to Save Lives and Project HOPE.

He added that the scale-up demonstrates the government’s determination to make quality healthcare more accessible, especially at the community level.

He explained that the initiative will ensure thousands of residents can undergo regular blood pressure checks, receive timely treatment, and benefit from continuous follow-up care within their localities.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, while commenting on the development, praised the health workers for their dedication and urged them to sustain their efforts toward achieving lasting success in hypertension control.

“This scale-up is a major step toward reducing the burden of heart disease, stroke, and other complications associated with high blood pressure. It also reflects the state government’s commitment to improving public health outcomes,” Dr. Yusuf stated.

He added that the initiative serves as a model for other states to emulate in expanding equitable and sustainable healthcare services across Nigeria.

The Ministry expressed optimism that the intervention will not only save lives but also enhance productivity and overall wellbeing among Kano’s population.
