Jonathan, Obasanjo Absent as Tinubu Presides Over Council of State Meeting

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently presiding over a meeting of the Council of State at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Former Presidents Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, as well as Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, joined the meeting virtually.

However, Daily Trust observed that as of the time the meeting went into a closed-door session, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, and former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan were not in attendance.

The Council of State meeting is expected to be attended by all former Presidents and Heads of State, the Vice President, serving and retired Chief Justices of the Supreme Court, as well as serving state governors.

This is the second Council of State meeting to be hosted by President Tinubu since assuming office, following a similar session held in August 2024.

Also in attendance are Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume; National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, and Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

Governors present at the meeting include those of Kwara, Rivers, Enugu, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Borno, Ogun, Sokoto, Edo, Kaduna, and Abia States, among others.

The meeting is expected to deliberate on critical national issues, including the worsening security situation in parts of the country and the possible appointment of a new chairman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
