Jigawa approves N2.5bn projects in education, others

The Jigawa State Executive Council, chaired by Governor Malam Umar A. Namadi, has approved projects worth over N2.5 billion aimed at boosting education, agriculture, and energy across the state.

The approvals were granted during the council’s meeting held on September 22, 2025.

In the education sector, the council approved four major interventions. These include the renovation of Tsangaya schools, bursary allowances for students, technical and vocational education support, and the supply of critical teaching materials.

A total of N869.6 million was approved for the renovation of additional structures in seven Model Tsangaya Schools, alongside the construction of 30 recitation halls and 30 reading shades across traditional Tsangaya schools. The project is expected to improve access to Islamic education and provide a more conducive learning environment for thousands of Almajiri pupils.

The council also approved N1.54 billion for bursary allowances to benefit 22,388 students, 13,622 male and 8,766 female studying in 83 tertiary institutions within and outside Jigawa State.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Sagir Musa, the bursary initiative is part of the government’s effort to ease the financial burden on parents, foster access to quality education, and empower Jigawa’s youth to achieve academic and professional excellence.

In addition, N835 million was approved for the implementation of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Programme across selected institutions. The project seeks to equip young people with relevant 21st-century skills to drive human capital development, job creation, and economic growth.

Another N779.2 million was allocated for the supply of teaching and learning materials, as well as mobility support for school supervision across all 27 local government areas. The move is expected to improve classroom resources, enhance learning outcomes, and strengthen accountability in schools.

On agriculture, the council approved N396 million for the payment of fertilizer allocated by the Federal Government to support smallholder farmers. The allocation includes 20 trucks of NPK fertilizer (12,000 bags) to be sold at a subsidized rate of N33,000 per bag. The initiative aims to cushion the effects of rising fertilizer prices and boost food production.

In the energy sector, the council approved a contract worth N733.1 million for a technical audit and planning of rooftop solar installations across critical public institutions. The project, under the State Interventions Solar Solution (SI-SS) Programme, will expand solar electrification to schools, healthcare facilities, and other essential services.

The council also approved the establishment of five new microfinance banks in Birniwa, Gujungu (Taura), Guri, Gwaram, and Kaugama local government areas to deepen financial inclusion and support local enterprises.

“These initiatives reflect the Jigawa State Government’s commitment to improving education, agriculture, energy, and financial inclusion,” Commissioner Sagir Musa said.

He added that the projects will have far-reaching impacts on education, food security, and access to financial services across the state.
