Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the appointment of Professor Amina Salihi Bayero as the substantive Vice Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano. Her five-year tenure takes effect from Monday, December 1, 2025.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
According to the statement, the governor’s approval followed a recommendation by the University Council after a rigorous and competitive selection process.
THR reports that since the establishment of the university in 2012, Professor Bayero becomes the first woman to be appointed Vice Chancellor.
Governor Yusuf, who serves as the Visitor to the University, commended the Council Chairman and members for upholding merit, transparency, and integrity throughout the exercise. He also called for prayers for Allah’s guidance as the new Vice Chancellor assumes her responsibilities.
Professor Amina Salihi Bayero is a renowned scholar of Analytical Chemistry and the first female PhD holder in Chemistry from Bayero University, Kano. She has held several academic and administrative positions, including Head of Department, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Deputy Vice Chancellor at Yusuf Maitama Sule University.
She is widely recognized for her research contributions, leadership skills, and commitment to mentoring young scientists. Her appointment is expected to boost academic excellence and advance gender inclusion within Kano State’s higher education system.
