Former DSS DG, Lawal Daura, Declares Interest in 2027 Katsina Governorship Race

Former Director-General of the State Security Service (DSS), Lawal Daura, has announced his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Katsina State, citing poor governance and persistent security challenges as the driving factors behind his decision.

Daura made this known during an interview with DCL Hausa on Tuesday, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the current administration, describing it as incapable of addressing the state’s pressing challenges.

According to him, he has concluded consultations regarding his political ambition and will soon disclose the political party on whose platform he will contest the election.

“I have been consulting on the platform to use for the election, and the consultations have been concluded. Very soon, I will make the platform known,” he said.

Daura questioned the rationale behind leaders seeking re-election despite poor performance, stressing that continuity should only be justified by tangible achievements.

“Why do people serve for one or two terms? If they get it right, that is fine. But if the reverse is the case, then there is no point in seeking re-election. It is obvious the current governor is not capable,” he stated.

Using an analogy, the former security chief likened governance to placing a load on someone’s head, noting that when the burden becomes excessive, it should be removed to prevent damage.

“For the current administration, we can say thank you for your efforts, but you should take a break because you can’t continue,” he added.

Daura also revealed that he never initially planned to contest for elective office, noting that although he has always admired politics, his involvement had largely been behind the scenes.
