FILM REVIEW: “Zabi Biyu”  A Recent Hausa Series on Arewa 24

By Justice Shamwil

Kannywood, the Hausa film industry has produced countless stories of love, betrayal, and family ties, but “Zabi Biyu”, a recent series on Arewa24, stands out as one of the finest. Directed by Salisu T Balarabe and produced under the guidance of Wash Waziri, the series combines youthful energy, moral lessons and high quality production. The eight-episode drama captures the complexities of youthful choices, friendship, and deceit.

Storyline:
At the heart of Zabi Biyu lies a risky bet between two university students the wealthy Don Nas and the arrogant Mansur. Their wager? If Mansur can win the heart of a beautiful young woman, Safiyya, he will be rewarded with a brand-new car.

What begins as a childish game quickly spirals into a web of deception, betrayal, and heartbreak. Safiyya, unknowingly caught in their scheme, becomes a pawn between selfish desires and genuine love. The drama intensifies when Bello, her fiancé, learns the bitter truth setting the stage for explosive confrontations and emotional turmoil.

Acting & Characters:
One of the strengths of Zabi Biyu is its cast.
Maryam Fulani shines as Safiyya, perfectly capturing innocence, confusion, and strength.
Aisha adds balance to the female presence, bringing depth to her role.
Surprisingly, even comic figures like “Broda “Shaggi stretch their acting skills, leaving behind their usual antics to deliver believable performances.
The chemistry among the younger actors is palpable, while the experienced hands guide the emotional weight of the story.

Production Quality:
Many viewers have described “Zabi Biyu” as “the best Hausa drama ever produced,” and that claim is not without merit. From crisp cinematography to careful editing and sound design, the production team has given audiences something that can stand on par with international television drama standards.
Costume choices reflect the urban university lifestyle, while locations add authenticity to the story. The camera work is stylish without being distracting, making the viewing experience immersive.

Themes & Lessons:
Beyond the entertainment, “Zabi Biyu” carries important messages:
The dangers of pride, arrogance, and selfish desires.
How peer pressure and reckless wagers can destroy real lives.
The importance of honesty and respect in love and relationships.
It’s a timely reminder for young people who may treat love as a game, forgetting its deep emotional consequence.

How I wish my thundering clap would reach AREWA 24 to say kudos for creating such a wonderful film “ZABI BIYU”

It’s a must watch for anyone who likes Hausa film!
