Farmers, herder killed in fresh Plateau attacks

At least four persons — three farmers and a herder — have been killed in separate attacks in Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas of Plateau State.

The incidents occurred just three days after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited the state following the killing of 28 people in Anguwan Rukuba community of Jos North LGA.

Leaders of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) confirmed that the farmers were killed on Sunday night in Pwomol village, Heipang District of Barkin Ladi LGA, while the herder was killed on Monday morning in Jol community of Riyom LGA.

Both groups accused each other of responsibility.

BYM spokesperson, Rwang Tengwong, said the attack targeted vigilante youths guarding the community, adding that one person sustained injuries and is receiving treatment.

He commended the intervention of the Special Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace, and urged residents to remain vigilant.

On the other hand, MACBAN chairman in the state, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, said the deceased herder was ambushed alongside his younger brother, who escaped.

“They gunned him down while they were heading to a nearby community,” he said, adding that he reported the incident to security agencies and recovered the body with soldiers.

Both groups denied involvement in the attacks.

The spokesperson of Operation Enduring Peace, Capt. Polycap Oteh said he would provide details after further clarification but had yet to respond as of press time.
