Emir of Kano, Sanusi II, Secures Special Admission to Study Law at Northwest University

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has been granted special admission into Northwest University, Kano, the institution announced on Monday.

A letter signed by Jafaru Sule Muhammad, Head of the Directorate of Examinations, Admissions, and Records on behalf of the Registrar, confirmed that the Emir has been accepted into the LL.B. Common Law and Sharia degree programme in the Faculty of Law at Level 200, effective from the 2024/2025 academic session.

Addressing the Emir at Gidan Rumfa, Kano, the letter stated:
“With reference to your application for special admission into this University, I write to convey the University’s approval of your admission after satisfying the requirements for special consideration. Accordingly, you have been accepted into the LL.B. Common Law and Sharia degree programme, Level 200, effective from the 2024/2025 Academic Session.”

The Registrar emphasized that the admission is subject to the Emir’s adherence to university rules and regulations and asked him to proceed with registration accordingly.

Sanusi II, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University (1981) and completed his National Youth Service in Yola as a teacher before earning a master’s degree in Economics in 1983. He also lectured at the university for two years.

He later pursued Islamic studies at the International University of Africa in Khartoum, gaining fluency in Arabic and deepening his knowledge of the Qur’an, Islamic law (fiqh), philosophy (falsafa), and the works of Western and Islamic scholars.

In 2024, the Emir earned a PhD in Islamic Law from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, with a thesis titled: “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and a Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco.”
