President Bola Tinubu has ordered the removal of Maryam Sanda — who was sentenced to death in 2020 for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello — from the presidential pardon list.
Sanda was among those earlier listed for clemency, but her name has now been struck out following a directive from the presidency to exclude individuals convicted of severe crimes.
According to the new directive, persons found guilty of offences such as kidnapping, drug trafficking, human trafficking, fraud, and illegal possession or trafficking of firearms will no longer benefit from presidential pardon.
The President also approved a review of the previous pardon list, leading to a reduction of sentences for some convicts who had earlier been granted clemency under the old arrangement.
