The Sokoto State Government has confirmed that a joint airstrike conducted by the Nigerian military in collaboration with the United States targeted terrorist hideouts in Tangaza Local Government Area, with no civilian casualties reported.
The confirmation came in a statement issued on Friday by the Director-General of Media and Publicity, Government House, Sokoto, Abubakar Bawa, shared with journalists in the state capital.
According to the statement, the operation, carried out on Wednesday, forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist and bandit networks operating in Sokoto State and along Nigeria’s northwestern borders.
“The impact of the airstrike could not be immediately determined as assessment reports from the Joint Operations are still awaited,” the statement said.
The government also addressed public concerns over suspicious objects discovered near Jabo town in Tambuwal Local Government Area, noting that investigations are ongoing.
“The circumstances surrounding the objects found near Jabo town could not be immediately explained, as analysis by Nigeria–US military authorities is still pending,” Bawa added. He emphasized that no civilian casualties occurred in either Tangaza or Jabo communities.
Reaffirming its commitment to international security cooperation, the Sokoto State Government welcomed the collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, describing it as vital in tackling terrorism and cross-border crimes.
“Sokoto State welcomes any collaboration between Nigeria and relevant global partners aimed at curbing terrorism and cross-border crimes in the state,” the statement said.
It added that ongoing security operations remain focused on safeguarding residents, protecting lives and property, and strengthening security architecture in the state. Over the past two years, the government has provided operational support and equipment to security agencies to enhance safety.
The statement also urged residents of affected communities to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and provide credible intelligence that could support ongoing operations. Citizens were further encouraged to pray for the success of security forces in their mission.
“The government calls on residents to continue to pray to Almighty Allah to assist our security agencies in defeating criminals in the state and across the country,” it concluded.
The joint airstrike is part of intensified military operations across Nigeria’s North-West, targeting armed groups linked to terrorism, banditry, and trans-border crimes.
