The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has officially stepped down after completing his second term in office.
Yakubu, who was first appointed in 2015, served two consecutive five-year terms, making him one of the longest-serving heads of the electoral body.
During a brief handover ceremony on Tuesday, Yakubu transferred leadership of the commission to May Agbamuche, a National Commissioner, who will now serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive replacement.
In his farewell address, Yakubu urged staff of the commission to extend their full cooperation and support to the Acting Chairman to ensure continuity and stability in the commission’s operations.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to announce a new INEC Chairman in the coming days.
According to sources, the appointment of a new electoral chief will be among the key items on the agenda at the upcoming Council of State meeting scheduled for later this week.
